Summary

Two rival apprentice sorcerers must team up to save their teachers and protect their own magic in this lively young adult romantic adventure from the New York Times bestselling author of In Deeper Waters and So This Is Ever After

Edison Rooker isn’t sure what to expect when he enters the office of Antonia Hex, the powerful sorceress who runs a call center for magical emergencies。 He doesn’t have much experience with hexes or curses。 Heck, he doesn’t even have magic。 But he does have a plan—to regain the access to the magical world he lost when his grandmother passed。

Antonia is…intimidating, but she gives him a job and a new name—Rook—both of which he’s happy to accept。 Now all Rook has to do is keep his Spell Binder, an illegal magical detection device, hidden from the Magical Consortium。 And contend with Sun, the grumpy and annoyingly cute apprentice to Antonia’s rival colleague, Fable。 But dealing with competition isn’t so bad; as Sun seems to pop up more and more, and Rook minds less and less。

But when the Consortium gets wind of Rook’s Spell Binder, they come for Antonia。 All alone, Rook runs to the only other magical person he knows: Sun。 Except Fable has also been attacked, and now Rook and Sun have no choice but to work together to get their mentors back…or face losing their magic forever。

I loved this novel! I've read other works from this author and was happy when I received this ARC。 I wasn't disappointed。 The book was sweet and charming while still invoking lots of emotion。 It had a bit of grump-sunshine to the relationship that I couldn't get enough of。 Rook is easily my favorite character I've spent time with this year。 Be sure to pick this one up! I very simply enjoyed this book a lot。 Both main characters, Rook and Sun, were kind of ridiculous and over-the-top in their own ways but in the most endearing way possible。 The same applied to both of their mentors—I just loved the little found family that ended up forming the heart of this book。 I definitely recommend this one if you're in the mood for queer YA fantasy with fun characters and social commentary on gatekeeping and who does and doesn't get to be part of a community。 Bonus points I very simply enjoyed this book a lot。 Both main characters, Rook and Sun, were kind of ridiculous and over-the-top in their own ways but in the most endearing way possible。 The same applied to both of their mentors—I just loved the little found family that ended up forming the heart of this book。 I definitely recommend this one if you're in the mood for queer YA fantasy with fun characters and social commentary on gatekeeping and who does and doesn't get to be part of a community。 Bonus points for a sweet romance and fun magical shenanigans。 。。。more

This story was a well written YA novel that had amazing representation! Sun and Rook's relationship ship is sweet and just as flawed as one would find in real life。 Antonia is a wonderful mentor character it is too easy to love, while Fable takes a while to warm to。 Overall, this book was one that made me feel warm and happy, even when dealing with tough topics like exclusion and authoritarianism。 Rook was one of the best characters I've read this year, and I really loved his character the most, This story was a well written YA novel that had amazing representation! this one reads cute and soft and I needed it at a time where every other book I picked up, made me want to carve my eyes out after a few chapters, also found family trope will forever be my weakness。 every new book by F。T。 Lukens gets better than the previous and this will be my personal fave。 5/5

Thank you Simon teen for an arc in exchange for an honest review! An absolute warm hug of a book! Lukens is able to take a dash of found family, themes of scooby doo and the raven boys and you get Spell Bound。 I think Lukens books are exactly what so many teens are looking for in the ya genre for cozy fantasy。

As always this author's books are amazing with great characters and story。 There were so many interesting and unique characters but the ones I liked the best are Rook and Sun both of them have great chemistry from the beginning。 I like how that relationship grows gradually with one being the mostly bright and happy go lucky while the other being the complete opposite you would think they wouldn't get along but the connection is great from the start。 The plot is interesting it starts with a magic As always this author's books are amazing with great characters and story。 There were so many interesting and unique characters but the ones I liked the best are Rook and Sun both of them have great chemistry from the beginning。 I like how that relationship grows gradually with one being the mostly bright and happy go lucky while the other being the complete opposite you would think they wouldn't get along but the connection is great from the start。 The plot is interesting it starts with a magic less Rook going to do whatever to get an apprenticeship to learn magic that happens and Antonia is interesting the story moves on Rook goes to a job and meets Sun whom he doesn't understand at first but comes to really like over time the feeling is mutual on Sun's part as well some not so great things happen after a while those things are resolved and we have an amazing happy ending looking forward to whatever else the author writes next。 。。。more

Lukens has a way of pulling you into a story and making you feel deeply for their characters in a short amount of time。 Rook and Sun are just so likable and you want to learn more about them from their first interactions。 Rook’s determination to be back in the world of magic and just wanting a place to belong is deeply relatable and it was just wonderful watching him grow into himself as a person and apprentice。 And Sun, my sweet baby。 I loved them so much。 They’re the grump to Rook’s unyielding sunshine and it’s the perfect pairing。 This was such a fun frenemies-to-lovers storyline。 (view spoiler)[ And the whole section with Sun as a cat???? Hands down my favorite part - the emotional vulnerability between them was just unmatched。 (hide spoiler)] I liked both So This Is Ever After and In Deeper Waters, but this one felt different - maybe more complex? The drama and conflict held a lot of weight and I was constantly guessing how this was going to end up。 (view spoiler)[ I felt myself rooting for Rook and Sun to dismantle the Consortium - and for Fable and Antonia to set aside their own differences and come together to protect their apprentices。 (hide spoiler)] My biggest complaint, and why I can’t rate this higher than 4 stars, is the pacing。 It took FOREVER for this story to really get going - and I didn’t truly feel invested in the plot until about 50% in。 It took me a week to read 150 pages and then I finished the rest in a day and a half。 The first half is almost solely exposition and character/world set-up, but it could have used more action。 I don’t think that this was necessarily marked in the right way - the storyline with the Consortium and Rook’s Spell Binder doesn’t occur until really late and it almost feels like a spoiler to have it in there? Overall, I really enjoyed this and I can’t wait to see what else F。T。 Lukens publishes! Thanks to Simon and Schuster and Netgalley for the advanced copy! 。。。more

I LOVED So This Is Ever After, so I had high expectations for this one。 Unfortunately (for me) it didn’t really reach them。 Don’t get me wrong, this was not a bad book。 It was well written, the pacing was just right, and the premise was interesting。 I just found myself getting really bored? This is definitely targeted more towards teenagers and had I read it when I was that age I would have probably enjoyed it more than I did。 The main characters Rook & Sun were likeable and had some funny moment I LOVED So This Is Ever After, so I had high expectations for this one。 Unfortunately (for me) it didn’t really reach them。 Don’t get me wrong, this was not a bad book。 It was well written, the pacing was just right, and the premise was interesting。 I just found myself getting really bored? This is definitely targeted more towards teenagers and had I read it when I was that age I would have probably enjoyed it more than I did。 The main characters Rook & Sun were likeable and had some funny moments together, but I didn’t see the chemistry between them, which made the inevitable romance arc less believable。 The ending felt very rushed and was tied up with a neat bow without any real consequences or fall out for the characters? This is a very low stakes book, so if that is your thing or you’re looking for a quick light read after something heavier then you will probably enjoy this。Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review。3 stars 。。。more

I preordered this book months ago and was so excited when I heard the little *ding* and saw my book downloaded。 I’m an F。T Lukens groupie— every book they write feels like a warm hug。 Though this one was not my favorite, the characters are impossible to dislike and I’m a sucker for a found family。 3。5 stars。 F。T if you see this I’m begging for an In Deeper Waters sequel。

I enjoyed this book and I thought it was really sweet but it definitely was on the young side of YA if not even middle grade。 Which isn’t a bad thing but I really don’t feel like this book was for me。 I really liked Sun and found Rook and their romance very sweet and accurate to being a young teenager。 Also I feel like all the representation was all really natural and well done, which is really refreshing。 Honestly my biggest issue with this book is that it feels like the plot doesn’t start unti I enjoyed this book and I thought it was really sweet but it definitely was on the young side of YA if not even middle grade。 Which isn’t a bad thing but I really don’t feel like this book was for me。 I really liked Sun and found Rook and their romance very sweet and accurate to being a young teenager。 Also I feel like all the representation was all really natural and well done, which is really refreshing。 Honestly my biggest issue with this book is that it feels like the plot doesn’t start until halfway through。 The synopsis reveals that Antonia gets captured so you expect that to happen way earlier in the book so I was very surprised it doesn’t happen until over 50% through。 Overall I think this book would be a fun read for a young teen, especially one who identifies with the characters。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoyed authors book "So this is ever after", so much that I read it twice almost right away。 Maybe because I expected same vibe from this one it didn't capture me as much。 There were parts what I really liked and there were parts where I was a bit bored and I had hard time finishing book, some contradictions in book made it hard to see story as a whole。 I really liked humor and banter between characters, it was brilliant and made book more memorable and for those parts I continued read I really enjoyed authors book "So this is ever after", so much that I read it twice almost right away。 Maybe because I expected same vibe from this one it didn't capture me as much。 There were parts what I really liked and there were parts where I was a bit bored and I had hard time finishing book, some contradictions in book made it hard to see story as a whole。 I really liked humor and banter between characters, it was brilliant and made book more memorable and for those parts I continued reading, but plot dragged enjoyment down on some parts。 I found some things conflicting and a bit cliche。 1。 Like this evil organization what was portrayed very black and white, but it didn't make sense to me that there are so many wizards and they allow someone like that to rule over them。2。 I also felt that explanation why Antonia was captured only because of her being unlucky and taken by surprise that day was not fitting with how she was portrayed。 Cause that was very important part of plot - her being captured and apprentices setting on saving her。 Considering that she is the most powerful wizard who took everyone down in court and kept whole magic organization on their toes with her threats resulting in them being freed after facing so serious charges feels a bit inconsistent with her being captured and then freed by whole magic organization who now fears her and won't touch her。 3。 And the charges and crimes themselves - it was mentioned that taking away magic last time was performed on Antonia's appearance who literally wanted to overthrow power and did serious crimes。 Then the same punishment was sentenced for a boy (Rook) who just developed harmless electric device? Also Antonia would be punished with same harshest sentence just for taking apprentice illegally? And it all being broadcast publicly as the most serious crimes in decades。It was a bit hard to look past those questions which arised。 But at least interactions between characters were enjoyable and that's what kept me going。 Will definitely read more of this author and maybe this book was aimed at younger audiences, overall it was good book。 But those few points I mentioned made me give it 3 stars (would give 3,5) 。。。more

This was my most anticipated book of 2023 and it did not disappoint at all。 I already loved all of F。T Lukens’ other books so when I saw they were publishing a new one this year I immediately preordered。 The story is engaging from the first page to the last。 I read it in one day, which has been unusual for me lately。 I was just captivated by the characters and the plot was incredibly intriguing。 Also the romance is just slow-burn enough that it isn’t frustrating。 Overall so so great。
